The 36-piece Porter Cable PC250MTK Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit allows you to grind, sand, scrape or cut wood, metal, drywall, PVC and many other materials. The tool, powered by a 2.5 amp motor, is variable speed, capable of oscillating between 10,000 and 20,000 times per minute, more than enough for most projects. No wrenches or bolts are required to change the attachments -- a simple lever secures an accessory firmly in place and also quickly releases it.
The Porter Cable PC250MTK weighs just a bit under seven pounds and is compact in size: only 4.5" x 15" x 11.2". It comes with a ten foot cord, which, though not quite as portable as a cordless, provides a lot of room to move and you don't have to worry about the battery going dead in the middle of a job. This oscillating tool is designed with a 2.8 degree oscillation angle for all the multi-tool accessories, which, surprisingly, works well for all of the attachable tools.
The variable speed dial is marked with numbers one through six as relative reference points. The approximate speed at setting 1, the low end, is 10,000 oscillations per minutes (OPM) and increases about 2,000 OPM for each increment up to the max of 20,000 OPM. The handle of this oscillating tool itself has several over-molds made of rubber, making for easy gripping and maneuvering. The multi-tool comes with a three year warranty. Everything is contained in a sturdy storage case.
What you get, besides the tool and the case, are:
-- One precision wood-end-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- One wood-end-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- One wood/metal-end-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- One 4" steel blade for wood (half-segment)
-- One carbide rasp
-- One flexible scraper
-- One rigid scraper
-- One sanding platen with a hook 'n' loop system for sandpaper
-- Nine sheets of 60 grit sandpaper
-- Nine sheets of 120 grit sandpaper
-- Nine sheets of 240 grit sandpaper
Available for purchase are some other useful attachments:
-- Precision plunge-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- Wood-plunge-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- Wood/metal-plunge-cut steel blade (1 1/2" x 1 5/8")
-- Wood/metal-plunge-cut bi-metal blade (3/8"x1 5/8")
-- Carbide blade for grout removal
As any oscillating tool, the Porter Cable PC250MTK can be used for sanding in tight places that would be difficult for any other sanding tool or method, for flush cutting of PVC or copper pipe, for trimming excess wood from window sills or door jambs, for removing caulking or adhesive from tile, wood and masonry and for preparing new tiles along with the flooring underlay. One project perfect for the Porter Cable PC250MTK is preparing the cutouts in drywall for switches and low-voltage lights.
Sanding is one type of work you may have to do a bit differently with this oscillating tool. Use light pressure and a medium oscillating speed, around 3 or 4. If you press too hard or use too fast an oscillating speed, you will remove less material than you think you would and may even pull the sandpaper right off the platen.
The strain on the arm and the wrist is much less than what you get from a full-size oscillating tool - the tool is very well-balanced. The grip is comfortable and still feels like it'll stand up to rugged use, indoors and out. Some people may think it's a bit noisy, but no more so than any other oscillating tool - hearing protection is a must for a tool like this, even if we're only talking earplugs. The vibration from the tool is not at all bothersome.
Changing the accessory tools is even easier than the ads say. Squeeze a lever by the drive shaft and off comes the old tool. Slip in the new one and let the lever secure the new one. The multiple hole-and-socket catch lets you position the tool at whatever angle you like.
The sandpaper and the blades seem wear out quickly for some people and not for others. The reason for this discrepancy is that some people may be pressing too hard - use a light pressure - the blades and sandpaper will last much longer. Read Amazon customer reviews here
When you look at and hold the Porter Cable PC250MTK, it might not seem as mighty a tool as serious construction tools. That said, the PC250MTK is perfect for light finish work and repairs. This oscillating tool is right at the perfect price point between the cheap ones that break after a few uses and the heavy-duty tools that require a mortgage.
On a function scale, the Porter Cable PC250MTK is a 8 out of 10. The only reason it's not higher is that you will have to go rent a heavy-duty oscillating saw for those big projects that this tool will not be capable of handing - but, you might need to do that only once or twice a year. You'll be able to use the Porter Cable PC250MTK every week - if you're a crafter too, you might even make use of it daily.
